Andrea: Anyway, Jo Brand wasn’t always a comedian. Before she started performing, she was a psychiatric nurse for ten years.

Andrea: She saw some terrible things during that time.

We had a guy come in one day with a huge carving fork – just stabbed it down onto the desk – that was quite scary. We had a lot of incidents where people would pick up chairs and throw them at you.

Andrea: There were lots of incidents like that.

  Jean: Incidents –

Andrea: Some people would throw chairs at her.

  Jean:

Andrea: So, what advice does Jo Brand have for new young comedians?

  Insert

It’s very important in stand-up to appear to be calm on the outside. So, to me, kind of 80% of it is appearing to be confident – and once you’ve cracked that, I think pretty much you can do anything – even if your jokes aren’t that funny.

Andrea: She says you need to appear or look calm.
