BBC Learning English - Jo Brand
Andrea: Anyway, Jo Brand wasn’t always a comedian. Before she started performing, she was a psychiatric nurse for ten years.
Andrea: She saw some terrible things during that time.

Jean:
Andrea: There were lots of incidents like that.
Jean: Incidents –
Andrea: Some people would throw chairs at her.
Jean:
Andrea: So, what advice does Jo Brand have for new young comedians?

It’s very important in stand-up to appear to be calm on the outside. So, to me, kind of 80% of it is appearing to be confident – and once you’ve cracked that, I think pretty much you can do anything – even if your jokes aren’t that funny.
Andrea: She says you need to appear or look calm.
